Foot orthoses are mainly used to correct the skeletal alignment and reduce the forces being carried up to the upper joints. However, the current process to deliver foot orthoses is invasive, lengthy and prone to subjectivity.

 

This research project aims to tackle these issues by proposing a novel approach to bridge the diagnosis and manufacturing process. It does so in two ways; by building a pressure sensitive insole for the data collection and a software for the analysis.

 

By combining these two systems we create a close-coupling between the pressure data and the geometric data. The latter is used for manufacture in order to leverage the state-of-the-art multi-material rapid-prototyping technology. Lastly, we are able to reduce subjectivity within diagnosis by quantifying foot features. Whilst providing non-invasive and faster care to the patient.

To create an automated system to produce 3D printed corrective insoles using plantar pressure analysis and a 3D scan of the foot.

technology

used

The software was created in Java with the processing library for visualisation. The 3D scan was created using a Microsoft Kinect. The final product was manufactured using the latest Stratasys Objet 3D printer.
